Why making money out of real estate investment became a job for housewives?
This seems an interesting projects that sheds lights on the gendered aspect of the property market in South Korea. As shown in the term 복부인 福婦人 which refers to a housewife who speculates on houses (I guess they were called so because real estate agencies were called as 복덕방 福德房), increasing family wealth in the housing market has been considered as women's job because under the Korean developmentalism, it was considered as a part of domestic economy. While husbands were expected to bring salaries from paid jobs, wives were expected to control savings and expenditure - but gradually, the investment returns became more important than wage incomes...
Based on in-depth interviews with 25 women from various age groups, this book shows how capitalism and patriarchy works in the private and the public life of South Korea's middle-class women. <100>
